Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the upcoming film, "Stronger," based on the 2013 Boston Marathon, set to be released at the end of September

Stronger Trailer

The first trailer for Stronger, a film based on the book of the same name, was released on Thursday.

The drama film stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Canadian Tatiana Maslany and follows the life of Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, and his subsequent recovery. Gyllenhaal, known for his roles in Brokeback Mountain, Love & Other Drugs, Donnie Darko and Nightcrawler, among others, portrays Bauman, a “27-year-old, working-class Boston man.” Maslany portrays Erin Hurley, Bauman’s girlfriend, in the film.

“A victim of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 helps the police track down the killers while struggling to recover from devastating trauma,” reads the IMDB synopsis.

Stronger began filming on April 4, 2016. At the 2013 Boston Marathon, Bauman was waiting for Hurley at the finish line of the race when two homemade explosives went off killing three people and wounding more than 260 others.

The release of the trailer comes after the mid-January debut of Patriots Day, a film starring Mark Wahlberg that chronicled the events of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Boston: The Documentary, which Matt Damon narrates, premiered at the 2017 Boston Marathon.

Gyllenhaal himself is a runner. Earlier this year, he was spotted in the Carribean wearing a Nike Oregon Project singlet.

The film is expected to be released on Sept. 22, 2017.
