Evan Dunfee’s advice on getting through the marathon: “Walk 50K and it’ll seem easy”

Olympic race walker Evan Dunfee showed up at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon today. Here's what he had to say about his race

Those who showed up to run the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon today got a chance to run alongside Canadian Olympian and world class athlete Evan Dunfee.

Dunfee race walks both the 50K and 20K distances and represented Canada at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, this year’s World Championships in London (as well as in 14th and 15th World Championships) and was competitive in Toronto two years ago when the city hosted the Pan Am Games.

On Sunday, he race walked the marathon clocking 3:16:20 in the midst of a crowd of fans and recreational runners. He says that one of the best parts about the experience at the Waterfront Marathon was passing spots that he recognized from the Pan Am Games.

Earlier this month, Dunfee competed at the Victoria Marathon getting himself to the finish in 3:23:30 in his first competitive walk since the IAAF London championships. He says that these races are all part of his build and that he’s satisfied with his time on the Toronto course. While many runners were worried about the day being a hot one for a marathon, he says his experience in Brazil and other athletes’ tales from the muggy Pan Am Games marathon quelled any fears he had over the heat.

Oh, and a word of advice from the Olympian: daunted by the distance of a marathon? Walk 50K first and it will seem like a breeze.
