VIDEO: Justyn Knight gets outkicked, responds with grace
In a sequence of events that is rather uncommon for Justyn Knight, the Syracuse University student gets outkicked but still sets a 3,000m school record.
It was a reversal of fortune for Justyn Knight at the Iowa State Classic on the weekend.
The 20-year-old, who is often known for his devastating late-race surges, was edged at the line in the men’s 3,000m in Ames, Iowa. Knight, a Toronto native who attends Syracuse University, still broke a school record and went under the previous facility and meet record, both of which were marks he previously held.
Entering the final lap, Knight had more than a five metre lead on the competition. Note that the indoor track facility at Iowa State University is 300m, longer than the traditional 200m indoor tracks and shorter than the usual outdoor 400m tracks. In the final stretch, Tulsa’s Marc Scott got the better of Knight. Scott clocked 7:47.57; Knight ran 7:47.82. The close finish was FloTrack’s kick of the week.

Not surprisingly, Knight took the defeat with grace and says he will learn from the experience. “You always appreciate those type of races,” he wrote. “Success is bred by those who learn from their failures. I will not be complacent.”

Knight, who narrowly missed out on hitting Canada’s Olympic standard in 2016, competes in Division One of the NCAA, the top-tier of collegiate athletics in the United States. He is known for his kick at the end of races as evident in races here, here and here.
