Musician Steve Aoki’s new video with Asics was shot at his own home in Vegas

When Asics found out about musician Steve Aoki's active lifestyle, they got on a flight to the south of France to make him the face of their brand

By the time Steve Aoki finished dinner with Asics in the south of France it was confirmed: the artist would be the new face of the athletic brand.

Aoki, a Japanese-American musician, gets up on stage somewhere around 300 times a year but on the side, he has a love for a mix of workouts which take him through his weeks. It’s not uncommon to see the artist running, moving into his downward dogs and tree poses, wrapping up an intense boot-camp session, or even doing push-ups on a private jet en route to his next big show. If fans were wondering how he has the mental stamina to perform on stage so many times in a year, his active lifestyle is likely the key. It turns out he even happens to be a fan of meditation.

All of these things combined got the attention of Asics. The brand’s motto is: “Sound mind, sound body” so when they caught wind that Aoki, with his crazy lifestyle of jet-setting and performing for packed venues, relies of a mash-up of fitness activities to stay zen, they instantly wanted to work with him. They flew to the south of France to grab a bite during one of his spare moments between shows.

“If there was ever a right person at the right time to join Asics, it’s Steve,” says Sarah Bishop, vice president of marketing at Asics. She expands to say that upon meeting face-to-face, it was clear to everyone involved that working together was going to be a fit. “That’s where he shared with us stories about his upbringing,” says Bishop.”We had a great discussion about his creativity and passion for movement.”

Now, Asics continues to release motivational videos as part of their #IMoveMe campaign. Playing a spotlight role in their latest is, you guessed it, Aoki. The company which many would associate with their running shoes is moving in a direction where they want to foster the love of a varying degree of fitness activities – not dissimilar to the musician’s approach. As Bishop explains, in their new campaign, they want Aoki’s example to inspire active Canadians to express themselves through movement, even if they choose to move through unconventional ways. It’s an inspirational music video, yes. What a viewer wouldn’t know just from watching it is that it was actually shot inside the home of this successful Vegas-based star. See that part where Aoki takes a running jump to plunge into a swimming pool below? That’s his own roof he’s jumping off of and that’s his own pool where he chills in his downtime. “He has that need for perpetual movement,” says Bishop.

TJ O’Grady Peyton of DECON shot and directed the social media campaign video for Steve Aoki and Asics.

It’s likely that Aoki fans will spot him in at least three or four more pieces like this in 2018 and according to Bishop, Asics will be putting on events across North America in the coming months attracting those who live this sporadic, active lifestyle that both Asics and Aoki promote. Rumour has it that we may even see some Asics gear inspired by this DJ and artist in the future but we’ll keep hush about that for now.
