Thousands of runners take part in a mesmerizing Viking clap before beginning the Berlin Marathon
Imagine being on the start line of a major marathon with 40,000 runners. Now, picture everyone doing an in-sync clap, moments before getting underway.
At the start of last Sunday’s Berlin Marathon, though many of the runners in the lead pack were well into the race, thousands participated in what is known as a Viking clap, a sequence made famous by the Iceland soccer team at the 2016 European Championships. Each clap is made above the head and gets faster throughout the sequence.

Race footage cut away from the lead men’s pack momentarily to catch the scene of the start line at approximately 10 a.m. local time, 45 minutes after the first runners headed off. “Look at this, the warmup,” one commentator says. “Wonderful celebrations at the start waiting to get underway.”
