My Style: “My mom ran for Team Canada. Her old uniforms have worked their way into my outfits.”

Oliver Bartoszek's mother used to run for Team Canada and represented the country in the 1996 Olympic Games. Today, her old uniforms have worked their way into this freelance design consultant's wardrobe

Oliver Bartoszek, like many runners, has lofty goals when it comes to the sport. The 27-year-old names staying uninjured as a priority and a Boston qualifying time as a motivator. His long-term goal? He’d like to beat his mom’s marathon PB. That’s easier said than done when your mom ran in the 1996 Olympic Games. Danuta Bartoszek was the last Canadian woman to qualify for the marathon before Lanni Marchant and Krista DuChene accomplished the feat in advance of Rio last year.

As a freelance design consultant, Bartoszek has always had an interest in the creative side of clothing. His motto towards garments has been heavily influenced by a design mentor from Toronto, Brian Vu, who told him that “clothing should get better with time – it should age well.” In a time of “fast fashion” and disposability, this got Bartoszek thinking about the history and stories embedded in garments – such as those pieces of Team Canada apparel lying around the house from his mother’s years on national teams.

“The cuts, the materials, so many small details change over the years and I find that transformation fascinating,” says Bartoszek. “I’ve started trying to document some of my mom’s paraphernalia by posting it on Instagram, so that other people can see what the national and Olympic kits have been like in the past.”
