VIDEO: Eliud Kipchoge runs 2:04 Berlin Marathon despite running shoe fail

Sunday’s Berlin Marathon was an eventful one to watch. Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge stole the show when he pulled away from the lead pack at 32K and came in for a 2:04:00 win.

Not only was he the champion at Berlin, but the time is also a PB and one he ran despite racing in two malfunctioning Nike flats. During the race, both insoles of his bright yellow shoes worked their way out at the back. They were visibly flapping around as Kipchoge hit the 16K mark but he says he struggled with them right from the beginning.

Running shoe fails are the runner’s nightmare and this happened yesterday despite the fact that Kipchoge had already tested them back home in Kenya. He chalks it down to bad luck though and says that his Nike’s are actually good quality shoes despite the mishap.

“It wasn’t a good day for me in these shoes, although they’re actually very good,” said Kipchoge. “I tested them in Kenya but just had bad luck on the day. I had problems from the first kilometre,” he said in an IAAF report.

Kipchoge says he was aiming for a world record at yesterday’s marathon but says he is happy to have raced on German soil.
