Kilian Jornet, the runner-up at the 2017 UTMB, is known as one of the best mountain and trail runners in the world.
He’s quite active on social media, regularly posting videos about his training or palm-sweating-inducing routes on mountain terrain. In his latest video, he shares his tips on how to stay safe and effectively run downhill.
The 29-year-old says one of the aspects of trail running he enjoys the most is “going down.” Here are Jornet’s three tips, all of which he expands in detail in the featured five-minute tutorial video.
Look ahead and anticipate your trajectory and where you’re going to put your feet.
2. Know the terrain
Learn the differences of how to approach the terrain whether it’s grass, rock, wet, dry or snowy.
3. Maintain balance and be aware of your centre of gravity
Use the entire body to maintain a low centre of gravity and adjust, like keeping the weight of your body in front, if on snowy terrain, when descending quickly, accordingly.
