Neither of last year’s returning champions was the winner today at the Zegama Trail Marathon in Zegama, Spain. Sweden’s Ida Nilsson was the winner of the women’s race, and Rémi Bonnet of Switzerland was the first male, in 3:54.

Last year’s winner, Norwegian Stian Angermund-Vik, was second (3:55), and BartÅ‚omiej Przedwojewski of Poland was third (3:56) in the men’s race. Second female was Spain’s own Laura Orgué, and third was New Zealand’s Ruth Croft.

The race, renowned for being hot and muddy in places, is a difficult, technical course, with an elevation gain of 5,472m. Starting in the town of Zegama, the course runs through beech forests and steep, rocky ascents. Zegama is located in the Basque region of northern Spain.

Zegama is the first race in the Salomon Golden Trail Series, which continues with the Mont-Blanc Marathon in France on July 1.
