Florida runner found after going missing during 100-miler

After a 36-hour search, ultrarunner Earl Blewett of Tulsa, Okla., was found safe

On Sunday morning, Brevard County police arrived at the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville, Fla., 60 kilometres east of Orlando, in search of a missing man who participated in the Ancient Oaks 100-mile endurance run. Earl Blewett, a 57-year-old professor at Oklahoma State University, disappeared on Saturday evening at approximately 9:30 p.m.

After missing for 36 hours, Blewitt was found Monday morning behind a convenience store not far from the course. Police said that Blewett was found safe but disoriented and was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Helicopters, police and volunteers were all sent out on the 5.5 km loop in search of the missing runner, scouring the forest since 11 p.m. Saturday.

“Every hour, we sent volunteer runners out on the course both clockwise and counter-clockwise looking for him,” said the race director Mike Melton to local media.

The Ancient Oaks 100-miler is an invitation-only race that is held on a 5.5 km loop on trails and gravel paths of Enchanted Forest Sanctuary. Race officials and the police were concerned about his whereabouts since the race is located near U.S. Interstate 95, and the sanctuary is home to many wild boar. Melton described finding Blewett on Monday as the “best possible Christmas present.”

Blewett has completed over 80 ultramarathons in his career, but he will never forget this one. He is currently receiving treatment for minor injuries.
