Kenyan snatches victory at Montreal Marathon

Kenya's Choge Julius Kirwa passed a collapsing William Naranjo of Colombia in his final step, winning the Montreal Marathon on Sunday in 2:17:41.

Kenya’s Choge Julius Kirwa passed a collapsing William Naranjo of Colombia in his final step, winning the Montreal Marathon on Sunday in 2:17:41.

Naranjo led most of the second half, but was suffering from severe dehydration and couldn’t hold on in the final five metres of the 42.195K race.

The top Canadian was Michel Lavoie, a mail carrier from Laval, Que., who was 12th in 2:36:25.

Ethiopia’s Serkalem Abrha won the women’s race in 2:35:46. Myriam Grenon of Longueuil, Que., was the top Canadian woman in 2:53:06.
