To race well at any distance, you must first know how to train and prepare. On race day, it's about controlling all the factors that are within your control, letting go of the rest, and being OK with the outcome.
Recovery is not automatic. Without recovery, those gains you've worked so hard for don't happen, and the result is overtraining and possibly injury. As with training, there are many elements to successful recovery.
