Nike is celebrating 29 years since the original Air Max shoe was introduced with the release of two new shoes: the Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Superfly “T” and the Nike Air Max Ultra “M”, both of which can be seen above. The Nike Air Max 1, the original design, will also be re-released today due to popular demand as well as it being Air Max day.

The Air Max is famous for having the iconic bubble in the heel of its early-day shoes before air pockets were wrapped along the entire sole of the shoe in 1997. The technology was first introduced in 1987.

Runners have a lot to look forward to when it comes to upcoming Air releases including the Nike Air VaporMax, unveiled at Nike’s innovation summit in New York City recently. That’s in addition to a number of other products including the Nike LunarEpic FlyKnit.

Canadian Running was on location for the event and got a first glimpse of the shoe, which stays true to its name offering users the ultimate feeling of running on air.

The lightweight cushioned shoe and it’s accompanying Air Max technology, expected to be released in the spring of 2017 but without detailed price yet, can be seen below:

The idea behind the shoe was to get users to run directly on air, according to vice-president of innovation at Nike Seana Hannah. The shoe underwent seven years of testing during which many elite runners offered feedback on the VaporMax.

The inclusion of the Air technology eliminates the need for a bulky, foam outsole and with the use of air bubbles instead, valuable weight can be shed off the shoe for training and racing. Another of Nike’s signature technologies, Flyknit, will compose the upper part of the shoe.

100% Air, coming in 2017. They won't pop and feel like pillows, the VP of Innovation promised 🙂 #nike2016 #vapormax

As can be seen in the below video, the pockets of air are confined to several large pieces of rubber in what Nike calls “one holistic VaporMax Air unit,” which helps reduce weight even more. Watch the 25-second clip below:
