As trail runners, we deal with the unexpected–on the trails and in life. On May 23, 2015, endurance trail runner Dave Mackey faced the unexpected on a familiar run. A giant boulder shifted and sent the athlete falling down the mountain, landing on him and crushing his left leg. The following year was spent undergoing surgeries, leaving him and his family with the decision to amputate. Filmmakers and ultrarunners Billy Yang and Matt Trappe tell the story of Mackey’s perseverance during and after his life-changing accident.

In 2018, Mackey attempted to complete the Leadville Race Series as the first ever leg amputee, calling himself a “Leadman.” Watch the inspiring story of Dave Mackey’s journey back to trail and ultrarunning.
