BREAKING NEWS: Ethiopian legend Haile Gebrselassie announces his retirement after dropping out of the New York City Marathon at Mile 16 with a knee injury. Canada’s Simon Bairu drops out at Mile 23. Gebre Gebremariam wins the men’s race in 2:08 and Edna Kiplagat wins the women’s event in 2:28. Shalane Flanagan second in her debut.
