About 1,300 finishers at Sunday’s Chicago Marathon were in for disappointment, as the race ran out of medals before everyone was finished.

Race organizers say they ordered enough medals for everyone who finished in less than 6:30:00, but an ABC News investigation has discovered at least 1,300 runners didn’t get medals after finishing the race.

While 45,000 runners are allowed to sign up for the race, on average about 36,000 usually finish within the allotted time. Race officials told ABC they ordered more than enough medals. But while most finishers received one, those who crossed around the six hour mark say they did not receive one.

Race organizers weren’t sure what happened to the medals, but have launched an investigation to find out.

“As part of our efforts to understand how this occurred, we confirmed that we did purchase more than enough medals,” organizers told ABC News. “Knowing this, we are looking into the reasons why we did not have enough medals at the finish line. This includes interviewing staff and volunteers at the finish line, checking inventory delivered into Grant Park, talking to security and more.”

Race officials have promised to mail out medals to those who did not received one.
