Alysia Montano reacts to doping scandal WADA investigation

Montano

A cut up Alysia Montano has spoken out about yesterday’s World Anti Doping Agency findings on Russia’s systematic doping problem in track.

Allegations surfaced about a year ago in a German documentary that showed incriminating video and audio of Russian athletes and coaches talking about the consumption of banned substances. It prompted WADA to commission an independent investigation. That report was released Monday.

It confirmed the allegations and proved that there has been corruption in high-level athletics. Richard Pound, who headed the investigation suggested Russia be banned from the 2016 Olympics.

It goes without saying that this hugely affects the careers of hard-working clean athletes that have been competing at Olympic and world championship events.

U.S. track star Alysia Montano is one such athlete whose career has been greatly impacted from this news. Yesterday she spoke out in a video reacting to the report.

“Obviously a lot of us have known about it beforehand. A lot of us have known it has been going on in our sport for a really long time,” she says. “Without any proof, you’re pointing fingers.”

There is a likely possibility that Montano will be awarded four medals once dopers are stripped of theirs.

She could be looking at one from 2011 world championships, a bronze from 2012, a bronze from 2013 and a silver from indoor world championships in 2010.

“It’s not just the medal. It’s not about you being the bronze medalist, the silver medalist, the gold medalist. It’s about putting in an honest effort, time and emotion. Being cheated out of it, you can’t get back those moments. You can’t replace those feelings that you could have been able to experience at the time.”
