Runner killed by driver in B.C. was a volunteer firefighter

The runner killed on Gabriola Island, B.C. last week has been identified as Jay Dearman, a volunteer firefighter.

According to Victoria-based CHEK News, the runner killed was a member of the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department. The driver crossed over the oncoming lane of traffic and struck the runner, who was transported to hospital and succumbed to injury.

“Jay joined the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department in June of 2012,” the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department wrote in a post dated Jan. 29. “You may have seen him fighting a fire, responding to a motor vehicle incident, or attending a medical call as a first responder.”

“You may have known him for his exceptional cabinet-making skills, or as an avid fisherman, or for the decade he spent coaching junior softball on the Lower Mainland,” the fire department added. “He loved people and people loved him.”

CHEK News reports that the runner was with two others in a group at the time of the collision.

Gabriola Island is one of the Gulf Islands in the Strait of Georgia, east of Nanaimo.
