Another reason the Boston Marathon is great: It has its own beer

For the fifth consecutive year, Samuel Adams is partnering with the Boston Marathon to provide a race-inspired, commemorative beer, the Boston 26.2 Brew.

The Boston Beer Company, which produces Samuel Adams beer, is the second-largest craft brewery in the United States based on sales. The brewery released its first batch of Samuel Adams lager over Patriots’ Day weekend in 1985 and the Boston Marathon, one of the world’s most historic road races, is also held annually on Patriots’ Day.

It’s only appropriate that Samuel Adams now produces a Boston 26.2 Brew for the marathon in partnership with the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.), the host organization. This year’s race takes place on April 18.

Cheers to the @samueladamsbeer #BrewCrew! Can't wait to see you crush 26.2 miles (and then you can have #262Brew)

The team has made its presence felt at the pre-race expo where runners gather their race bib and goodies ahead of the big day. “Free beer” is bound to get the attention of some of the runners though it’s probably best to hold off until after Monday morning’s race.

Samuel Adams first released the run-inspired, commemorative beer in 2012. It’s a Gose beer, an unfiltered wheat brew which originated in Germany. Slightly-salted water is used in the brewing process, a benefit for runners looking to replenish their sodium levels following the 42.2K race, which begins in Hopkinton, Mass. and ends on Boylston Street in nearby Boston.

According to Samuel Adams, the beer will only be available at “race-related events, at pubs and restaurants along the marathon route, and a limited number of pubs and restaurants throughout New England.”

Profits from the beer go to the Greg Hill Foundation to help survivors of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

The brand is a major sponsor of the Boston Marathon

With the magnitude of the Boston Marathon in mind, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the race has a beer dedicated to it. The race even has an official supplier of apples courtesy of Rainier, who will provide pre- and post-race fruit to runners and volunteers.
