What to wear when… it starts to get chilly outside

When the temperatures drop, runners have to be more mindful of the way they dress. Luckily, fall offers some of the gear for runners of all kinds.

Now that fall is officially here, runners across the country have the perfect, crisp running weather that we’ve craved all summer. Late in the year, runners get a breather from hot, humid air but during these weeks, it’s also time to start thinking of a cozier running wardrobe. Above is a collection of our favourite running gear for when the runs are brisk– but not yet frigid (official names and prices are in the photo captions).

1) Nike men’s top: In fall, it’s common for the days to be cool enough that a runner needs more than a simple t-shirt. Get a few kilometres into the run though and something like a heavy fleece is just too hot. This Nike long sleeve top is a smart in-between.

2) Under Armour men’s hoodie: This one is new in the Under Armour collection. On cooler mornings, it’s an obvious choice: it keeps heat in while expelling sweat, it won’t feel bulky and its slick outer will repel a light mist. The fabric feels soft and smooth and so it’s not likely to cause skin irritation– that’s important on your long run.

3) New Balance women’s jacket: New Balance does a great windbreaker. The pattern on this one, is fun and punchy. It’s going to serve as that shell you need on a chilly or rainy day when heading out for the run and it’s also a nice piece to bring along to race day to prevent that post-race chill.

4) MEC men’s pants: These slouchy, cuffed sweatpants seem to be everywhere this fall. Wear it on an easy run or, if you’re a tights-only kind of guy when it comes to running, slip these on once in the door. We also love that they come at an affordable price. Perfect for that student cross-country athlete…

5) Reebok women’s lounge top: This is that piece that a runner reaches for once she’s put in the hard work and needs something soft and non restricting to lounge in. We all know that when it has been a tough evening of kilometre repeats, the last thing a runner wants to change into is jeans or a tight shirt. Comfort is key and this one is actually trendy enough to cross over to the athleisure world.

6) Nike women’s capris: Oftentimes, it’s in the details. There are many details on this pair of tights that will make female runners swoon. They’ve got a slick, tight fit so they won’t sag during the interval workout. The behind-the-knee mesh panels are a nice aesthetic and the pattern makes them stand out as a favourite in the drawer.

7) Adidas women’s pants: In fall, the race bag shouldn’t just contain the items a runner will wear from the start line to the finish. These pants are what a runner needs for the warm up and cool down. Running a relay? Something like these are perfect for wearing while waiting for your stretch.

8) Nike men’s zip top: Slip this over a t-shirt and a runner is set for his fall mileage on a windy day. Nike gives runners this one in a flattering tone that isn’t likely to clash with this other gear.

9) Reebok men’s vest: When it’s not too hot but not too cold, a runner needs a little extra something but sleeves can just be unnecessary. Don’t add bulk if you don’t need it.
