Kilt run keeps world record

Perth, Ont., came dangerously close to losing its world record status of biggest kilt run to its Scottish cousin.

Perth, Ont., came dangerously close to losing its world record status of biggest kilt run to its Scottish cousin, but the Canadians came through last weekend to keep the title.

The kilt run in Perth, Scotland, had initially anticipated more than 2,000 runners at its race on Saturday, June 2, putting the Canadian record at risk. But after race organizers fell just 16 runners short of the goal, the Canadian race was able to keep its title for another year.

“We expected them to beat our record,” Mary Stewart, co-organizer of the annual race and co-owner of The Running Goat store, told YourOttawaRegion.com. Stewart was in Scotland for the event with a team of 10 runners, and even joked about the Canadians putting the Scottish race over the 2,000 mark.

“That would have been bizarre if they were 10 over because of us,” she told the website.

The annual Lanark Mutual Five Miler race in Perth, Ont., holds the Guinness World Record for largest race with participants wearing kilts. This year’s race, on June 23, saw more than 2,000 runners take part.
