Scotsburn, N.S.’s Dave MacLennan will have to wait another year to reach a dozen wins at the Johnny Miles Marathon.

MacLennan, an 11-time winner of the New Glasgow, N.S. road race, finished 28 seconds behind winner Yarmouth, N.S.’s Bryan Hipson in 2:53:05. Hipson, the 2016 Blue Nose Marathon champion, took Sunday’s title in 2:52:37. MacLennan, who was battling a left hamstring injury heading into the race, first won the race in 2000 and has regularly been the Johnny Miles Marathon champion. It was his second marathon in the past 30 days as he finished sixth at the May 21 Blue Nose Marathon.

MacLennan has held the record for most Johnny Miles Marathon victories since 2012 when he won his ninth title. On Sunday, it was a battle between masters runners as both MacLennan and Hipson are over 50.

Nancy Alexander earned a Boston Marathon qualifying time winning amongst women in 3:28:23, a sizeable improvement on the 3:37:11 she ran at the 2016 Johnny Miles Marathon.

The Maritimes event first began in 1975 and is named after Johnny Miles, a two-time winner (1926 and 1929) of the Boston Marathon. He won bronze at the 1930 British Empire Games, an event which is known today as the Commonwealth Games.

The Johnny Miles Running Event was a two-day affair over Father’s Day weekend. The annual race hosts a Johnny Walk, 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon. Approximately 1,250 people participated in the various weekend races in rather humid conditions in Atlantic Canada. The race being a Father’s Day event meant that cheering squads were out in full force.
