Tim Hortons employee lends van to top women’s team at Cabot Trail Relay Race

The Dalhousie Dangerously Accelerative Ladies were in a bind when their team van broke down at a Tim Hortons on route to the Cabot Trail Relay Race when a stranger stepped in with a random act of kindness

Cabot Trail Relay Race

The winning women’s team at the 2017 Cabot Trail Relay Race found themselves in a major jam when their team van broke down and they had no way to get to the start line, let alone drive the entire 276K route around the trail. Fortunately, local Tim Hortons drive-thru employee Melanie Landry offered a helping hand.

Six women were stranded at a Tim Hortons after the team van failed them just outside the town of Baddeck, N.S on the Saturday morning of the annual race. Baddeck is approximately 20K from the start line of the relay and also hosts the finish some 24 hours later. The relay celebrated its 30th year this past weekend and will be inducted into the Cape Breton Sports Hall of Fame later this year.

As CTV News reports, Landry offered her personal vehicle to the team to use for the 276K, 17-stage relay race around the world-famous Cabot Trail. The half-dozen women, part of Dalhousie Dangerously Accelerative Ladies team, accepted the random act of kindness and made it to the start line in time.

Landry has run the race in the past and told CTV News that “there was no question in my mind. They needed a vehicle and I have one. I live in town. I can find a drive easier than them.” There were 70 teams who raced the Cabot Trail, according to the race’s team list.

The Cape Breton Post reports that the “Dalhousie Dangerously Accelerative Ladies'” winning time was 22 hours 2 minutes and 45 seconds. A team from Maine who call themselves ‘the Maine-iacs’ were the top team overall–and also for the seventh year in a row–and finished in 16:38:22. The top Canadian team was “The Black Lungs” from Ontario (17:16:59) followed closely by local team “Cape Breton Road Runners” (17:19:18). The top mixed and masters (over 40) teams were “UNB XC Alumni: Like Fine Wine Better with Age” (19:14:13) and the “Alva Road Runners” (22:19:08), respectively.
