Canadians podium at prestigious high school race in New York City

More than 60 Canadian high school athletes competed at New Balance Nationals Indoor in New York City on the weekend including a number of podium finishes.

Victoria Tachinski

More than 60 Canadian high school athletes competed at the Armory on the weekend including Victoria Tachinski and Shona McCulloch who ran to podium spots at the New Balance Nationals Indoor competition in New York City.

The event has entry standards and acts as the U.S. high school national indoor championships but is also open to high-level Canadian athletes.

Tachinski, a grade 11 student from Winnipeg, finished second in both the girl’s 400m running 53.97 as well as in the girl’s 200m emerging elite section (24.48), both lifetime bests.

In the distance events, McCulloch, a grade 11 student at Longfields-Davidson Heights Secondary School in Ottawa, ran a blistering 16:31.22 in the girl’s 5,000m event to finish third. McCulloch says her idol is Canadian marathon runner Lanni Marchant. She ran 36:02 at the Ottawa 10K last May.

Her time is 0.08 seconds faster than Heather Petrick’s previous Canadian indoor junior best (on regulation, 200m-sized tracks), which Petrick set in 2014. Charlotte Prouse ran 16:15 at Dempsey at the University of Washington this year but the mark was set on an over-sized track (307 metres) and aren’t officially recognized, according to the Athletics Canada regulations.
