Brandon McBride, Crystal Emmanuel advance at IAAF World Championships
The Canadian champions over 800m and 100m automatically advance through the first round at the 2017 IAAF World Championships
The morning session on day two of the IAAF World Championships in London was highlighted by the men’s 800m heats and women’s 100m heats. Canadians Brandon McBride and Crystal Emmanuel, both national champions in their events, advanced through as automatic qualifiers.
McBride, the only Canadian to qualify in the event, finished second in heat two of the men’s 800m heats running 1:45.69 after leading the field through 400m in 51.80. The first three athletes in each of the six heats automatically advanced to the next round of the two-lap event. The men’s 800m semifinals are scheduled for Aug. 6 at 4:15 p.m. EDT.

In the women’s 100m, Emmanuel, the Canadian record holder over 200m, advanced running 11.14, a new personal best, during a heavy downpour. She finished second in heat two, behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson, the Olympic champion. The semifinal and final of the women’s 100m is on Aug. 6 at 2:10 p.m. EDT and 4:50 p.m. EDT, respectively.
