The Devonport Oval in Australia hosted a unique track competition entirely on grass at the end of December.

While many outdoor track surfaces across Canada continue to be bombarded with snow, athletes in Tasmania, an island state of Australia, took to grass for a recent track competition hosted at the Devonport Oval.

The Devonport Oval, typically an Australian rules football and cricket stadium, was transformed into a grass, oval track. Still, the venue wasn’t as good as Denmark’s Keinicke & Overgaard Arkitekter, unofficially known as the ultimate playground for runners.

The Sports Carnivals Association of Tasmania hosted the event at the end of December, with Australian Olympians Ryan Gregson, Collis Birmingham and Genevieve LaCaze taking part.

Training on grass, in comparison with asphalt and concrete, has occasionally been considered by some as being softer on the legs as the ground absorbs more impact than harder surfaces.
