Former Olympic champion commits third doping infraction, banned for life
Asli Cakir Alptekin of Turkey has been banned for life from athletics for committing a third doping infraction
A third strike for Asli Cakir Alptekin means she is banned for life from athletics.
The then-2012 Olympic 1,500m champion from Turkey was convicted of a doping infraction for the third time. She was stripped of the 2012 Olympic, one of the dirtiest finals in regards to athletes who have been caught using performance-enhancing substances, and European titles in 2015 for a previous doping infraction in regards to abnormalities in her biological passport. The top-two finishers at the London Olympics in the women’s 1,500m were disqualified as were two other finalists, a Russian and a runner from Belarus.
The 32-year-old was given an eight-year ban in 2015, which was reduced to four years, and was backdated to 2013. She raced at a European cross-country event this past February, shortly after her suspension was lifted. As Sports 24 reports, she also committed a doping infraction in 2004.
According to U.S.-based FloTrack, “Turkey’s athletics federation did not reveal the details of her latest and final offense.”
