Bekele to chase world record in Zurich

Reigning world-champion Kenenisa Bekele of Ethiopa, has announced he'll make an attempt at the world record over the 5,000m distance, Friday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Ethiopa’s Kenenisa Bekele, who recently won both the 5,000m and 10,000m races at the world track and field championships, has announced he’ll make an attempt at the world record over the 5,000m distance, Friday in Zurich, Switzerland.

The organizers of the IAAF Golden League meet have arranged for pacemakers to try to bring Bekele through 1,000m at 2:32, 2,000m at 5:04, and 3,000m at 7:37. Those are the splits Bekele hit when he smashed the world record five years ago in Hengelo, Netherlands, running a blistering 12:37.35.

Bekele is also chasing a $1,000,000 prize, if he is able to win all six of the Golden League events.
