Canada’s 1500m hope fails to advance to final

Nate Brannen, of Cambridge, Ont. , wasn’t able to mount a finishing kick strong enough to reach the final at the World track and field championships, Monday in Berlin.

Brannen finished ninth in his semi-final, in a time of 3:38.97.

Many had expected Brannen to reach the final, after running some of the best races of his career, this season.

The men’s 1500m final takes place Aug. 19.

But there is some good news for Canadian track fans.

Priscilla Lopes-Schliep and Perdita Felicien begin competition in the 100m hurdles on Tuesday. Both are considered medal threats.

While the Canadian team has yet to hit its full stride, Jamaica’s Usain Bolt electrified the Berlin crowd, and fans around the World with his record-setting performance, Sunday night.

His time of 9.58 seconds obliterated his previous world record in the 100m. Bolt will also compete in the 200m, beginning Aug. 18.
