Canadian Brandon McBride on Bowerman preseason watch list

Canadian 800m runner Brandon McBride was named to the 2016 Bowerman Trophy preseason watch list as one of the top U.S. collegiate athletes.

Brandon McBride has been named to the 2016 Bowerman Trophy preseason watch list as one of 10 nominees expected to vie for the award given to the top collegiate athlete in the United States.

McBride, a native of Windsor, Ont., currently attends Mississippi State University, a top-tier (NCAA Division 1) American institution, in Starkville.

The Canadian specializes in the 800m, having represented Canada at the IAAF World Junior Championships and the IAAF World Youth Championships.

“It’s always nice to be put on such a list,”McBride admitted. “I’m excited to get the season started.”

The award is given annually to the top collegiate male and female athlete in the United States.

McBride won the 800m at the American collegiate indoor championships in 2014 as a sophomore and went on to win the outdoor title in the same event. He has a lifetime best of 1:45.35.

The 21-year-old was named to the award’s preseason watch list for the second consecutive year according to Mississippi State.

“Word’s can’t describe how very proud I am of everything that Brandon has accomplished during his time here at [Mississippi State University],” coach Steve Dudley said. “Not only is he a tremendous athlete, but also an excellent student who upheld a 4.0 GPA last semester. He’s a team leader on and off the track.”

McBride is one of Canada’s top 800m runners and is expected to qualify for the Rio 2016 Olympics if he is able to replicate his lifetime best 800m performance again this season.
