Canadian hurdlers all advance to semis

Jessica Zelinka, Phylicia George and Nikkita Holder had relatively clean runs.

As expected, all three Canadian women’s hurdlers have advanced to the next round, after relatively clean runs in the heats on Monday morning, at London’s Olympic stadium.

Calgary’s Jessica Zelinka, who finished seventh in the heptathlon on Saturday, had the fastest time among the Canadians in the first round in 12.75 seconds.

“This morning was like, ‘Hey body you’re not done yet,’ followed the same routine and rhythm,” Zelinka said. “But I knew my time would be slower. I wasn’t going for time, [just] wanted top 3 to move to the semis. I woke up sore, didn’t train yesterday, this heat was to find my legs.”

Toronto-area hurdlers Phylicia George and Nikkita Holder also advanced. George was second in her heat in 12.83, while Holder was fifth in her heat in 12.93 and advanced on time.

Australia’s Sally Pearson had the fastest time of the first round in 12.58.

The semifinals of the 100m hurdles are Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Toronto’s Sarah Wells finished eighth in her semifinal of the 400m hurdles in 56.71 and didn’t advance to the final.
