stwm sado cheropThe 2016 Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon saw lots of drama: wrong turns, a sprint finish for the win, Olympic-qualifying runs, a triple marathon run, nearly a Canadian record and even a nasty fall resulting in a broken femur.

But perhaps the most controversial moment was in the fight for second place in the women’s race. Ethiopia’s Fatuma Sado definitely crossed the finish line ahead of former champ Sharon Cherop, yet race organizers awarded them with a tie. There was some suggestion that the contact between Sado and Cherop resulted in Sado’s advance, yet the quick succession of photos by our finish line photographer, as well as watching the rebroadcast of the live stream shows that, if anything, Cherop was the instigator of the contact more so than Sado.

Regardless, both have walked away $12,000 richer for placing second.

You can watch the complete broadcast (which starts at about 15:00 of the total replay), as well as the controversial moment (starting at about 3:08:45) by clicking here.
