Kiprotich to run Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon

The elite Kenyan looks to win the race and set the course record.

Elite Kenyan marathoner John Kiprotich has decided to join the field in Toronto this October.

The 23-year-old was slated to run the Amsterdam Marathon this fall, but opted out of the race when he found out there was a spot available in at the Waterfront Marathon. Kiprotch is a raising star in the crowded field of East African runners, having won the Vienna Marathon in 2011. He has thus far clocked in a 2:07:08 PB, and is obviously motivated by the $25,000 bonus for the STWM course record.

“Based on the good level of my preparation, and my good shape, my goal for the Toronto Marathon is to win the race and break the course record,” Kiprotch told Paul Gains. The course record currently stands at 2:07:58.

Kiprotich is training under legendary coach Renato Canova, who is leading many of today’s greatest marathoners to sub-2:05 times. Kiprotich trains with a group of 15-20 elite Kenyan runners, including Olympic silver medalist Abel Kirui.

Kiprotich is excited about gaining an elite spot in the Toronto marathon. “I’ve been reading the news about the Toronto marathon for ages,” he told Gains, “and I know a few athletes who competed there such as (four time winner) Kenneth Mungara and Nixon Machichim. And, also my agent, Gianni Demadonna, told me it is a good, well organized Marathon. I’ve seen the circuit on the map and I’m looking forward to checking the course in person, before running there.”
