LIVE: Canadians to drink and run for beer mile world classic title in London
The beer mile world classic is being streamed live from London today as Canada looks to defend its men's title at the second annual event.
The second annual beer mile world classic is today in London and features Canada’s fastest athletes. The beer mile (1,609 metres) is just over four laps of a standard 400m track with a 355 mL, five per cent beer to begin each lap.
The action is underway as of 9 a.m. EDT in England but the women’s and men’s elite races don’t begin until noon. The action will be streamed live for free from the event overseas.
Schedule (times EDT)
7:30 a.m. – Registration Opens
9:00 – Open races start, heats every 30 minutes
11:30 – Entrance ceremony for national elite teams
Noon – Women’s elite race
12:30 – Men’s elite race
1:00 p.m. – Awards ceremony
Canada will be looking to defend the men’s title after the “Kenya of beer miles” won the inaugural event in San Francisco in 2015. This is the first time any beer mile world event has been held outside of North America.

Newly crowned world record holder Corey Bellemore and Brooks-sponsored Lewis Kent headline the men’s team and look prime to defend their title. Squads from the United States and Australia are the biggest threats to Canada’s dominance in the beer mile.

On the women’s side, Lianne Girard and Anne Belanger will run for Canada. The women’s elite race kicks off the first of two elite beer miles at noon EDT. The men’s elite race is at 12:30 p.m. EDT. This year’s beer mile world classic is taking place at Allianz Park and will mark the first time that a global championships is held on a track surface.
More than two hours of all-comers races will be run (on 30 minute intervals) before the elites take the track.
