Many hospitalized due to heat at LA Marathon

LA Marathon

The 30th edition of the LA Marathon was run Sunday in record-breaking heat.

Reports from local media vary on the number of participants actually sent to hospital with heat-related illness, noting numbers between 35 and 60, though it seems obvious heat caused a major problem for many on the course.

Temperatures during the race reached 32C, breaking the record for that day by nearly three degrees. Over 150 people were treated on the sidelines of the course for health issues relating to heat. A 61-year-old man was treated for cardiac arrest shortly after the 34K mark.

The heat was so intense the race moved the start time up 30 minutes and has cooldown stations were placed along the course to spray runners with mist. The LA Fire Department was also at the race hosing runners down.
