Mutai, Kilel and Cherop to run B.A.A. 10K

The fastest marathoner in history will follow up his lightning fast 10K win in Ottawa with the B.A.A. 10K on June 24.

Even though he will not be going to London this summer, Geoffery Mutai is keeping himself very busy.

The fastest marathoner in history — although not the world record holder — will follow up his lightning fast 10K win at Ottawa Race Weekend with the B.A.A. 10K on June 24.

Mutai won the inaugural race last year in 27:19, one of the best times ever laid down in a 10K on American soil. At Ottawa Race Weekend this year, Mutai destroyed the field, running the majority of the race completely alone, finishing with a 27:41.

On the women’s side, defending champion Caroline Kilel will attempt to defend her B.A.A. 10K title against a formidable opponent in 2012 Boston Marathon winner Sharon Cherop. Both Kilel and Cherop have shown strong finishing kicks in the marathon. In 2011, Kilel won the Boston Marathon by outkicking Desiree Davila and Cherop to win in 2:22:36.

Last year’s runner up, Kiwi Kim Smith raced last weekend in San Diego, where she won the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Half-Marathon. She will not be competing in this year’s B.A.A. 10K and instead will rest up for the Olympic marathon in August.

Apart from Mutai, the B.A.A. is bringing back 2012 Boston Marathon runner-up Levy Matebo for the 10K race. Matebo ran exceptionally well in the heat, leading much of the marathon with a ferocious pace considering the conditions, but his gutsy performance was all for not when Wesley Korir closed the gap in the late stages of the race. Matebo’s brave running style should add drama to this second edition of the B.A.A. 10K.
