Nasty battle for second forces a tie at STWM

STWM15The Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon was forced to make a tough call in the aftermath of the elite women’s finish. Ethiopian Fatuma Sado and Kenyan Sharon Cherop had contact as they both sprinted for the finish line, fighting for second place. Sado managed to get in front of her with just a few metres remaining, and appeared to block Sherop from making one last attempt at pass. Sado clearly crossed the line first, and Cherop fell badly right on top of the finish line.

In the aftermath of the race, it was unclear who would be awarded second place and the $12,000 that comes with it. Third place is awarded $8,000.
The race decided to award both with second place. Cherop and Sado are both listed on Sports Stats, the official timers of the race, as finishing with 2:24:16, but with Cherop in second and Sado in third.
