It didn’t take long for two members of China’s track and field team for the Olympics to see first hand the dangers of Rio. According to Inside the Games, a 110m hurdler and a cameraman were the victims of an elaborate scam upon arriving at the team’s hotel this week.

Shi Dongpeng, who will be competing in his fourth Olympic Games for China, was approached by a local resident in the hotel lobby shortly after arriving in Rio. The local, who appeared to be drunk, vomited on Dongpeng and the Chinese athlete proceeded to go the washroom to clean off.

A cameraman, who was with Dongpeng at the time of the incident, chased after the perpetrator to the exterior of the hotel. When both returned, the camera gear and the pair’s luggage was gone. Security footage confirmed that the act was part of a planned robbery.

According to the report, Dongpeng and the cameraman went to the local police station but had to wait more than two hours because of a long line. The line of people were predominately mugging victims. The robbery comes just days after a Jiu Jitsu athlete was kidnapped in Rio.

There are six days remaining until the opening ceremony at the Olympics and teams are arriving to Rio in the next few days if they have not already done so. Canadians competing later in the Games, the men’s marathon for example, will be staying home until well after the Games begin before making the trip south.
