Ontario 10,000m

The London 10,000, which doubled as the Ontario championships, was run under cool and calm conditions on Saturday evening in southern Ontario. Evan Esselink, a graduate of the University of Indiana, crossed the line as the Ontario champion in 29:23.64, one of two men to run sub-30 along with Newmarket Huskies’ Kevin Tree.

London Runner Distance Club’s Leslie Sexton was the lone entrant in the women’s 10,000m and ran 34:38.57.

Popular now: Runners disqualified for wearing headphones at a 10K road race.

The men’s field was the deepest in the event’s 11-year history as 15 athletes ran faster than 31 minutes. The event also featured the Ontario masters 10,000m championships, which was won by Stuart Galloway in 34:51.09.

Three junior athletes hit the 10,000m standard for the world junior championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland including Sergio Ráez Villanueva, Ehab El-Sandali and Cameron Linscott. The qualifying standard is 31:10.

RELATED: WR holder David Rudisha left on the start line in odd Shanghai 800m race.

Fourteen men from Saturday’s field now sit in the top-26 of the Athletics Canada 10,000m rankings, according to race director Steve Weiler, though it’s early in the season. May and June are ideal times for athletes to gear up for the summer season. The Canadian track and field championships will take place in Edmonton at the beginning of the July, a prelude to the Olympic Games in August.

In addition the 25-lap races, the meet also hosted deep fields in the men’s and women’s 1,500m.

Weiler noted that four junior-aged athletes have now hit the world junior championship standard at London-hosted track meets this season. Branna MacDougall, who has committed to attend Iowa State University, hit the 5,000m standard on May 1.
