It was a banner day at the 20th Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon on Sunday.

Kenneth Mungara of Kenya and Ethiopia’s Amane Gobena put their stamp on the record book, recording the fastest ever marathons in the city.

Mungara clocked 2:08:31 to win the men’s race, while Gobena was timed in 2:28:30, winning the women’s race by more than a minute.

The pace in the men’s race was blistering from the start, despite the humid, windy conditions. The top three Mungara, Chala Lemi, and Gashaw Melese Asfaw, were all under the previous course record of 2:09:30.

It was a disappointing day for Canadian Lioudmila Kortchaguina, who was hoping to contend for a podium finish in the women’s race. Her day ended early, when she turned her ankle on a streetcar track.
