Russian marathoner and masters world record holder suspended for doping
The Russian athletics federation suspended five athletes on Thursday just days before the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is set to release its report on doping in Russian athletics, according to the CBC.
The suspended athletes include 41-year-old Mariya Konovalova, who set the women’s world masters marathon record in 2015 at the Nagoya Women’s Marathon in Japan running 2:22:27. The Russian athlete finished second at the Chicago marathon in 2010 and third in 2013.
Konovalova received a two-year ban and will have her results stripped dating back to 2009 after her biological passport, a record of doping test results over a period of time, showed irregularities.
Other suspended athletes include Olympian and hammer thrower Maria Bespalova, race-walker Evgeny Nushtaev, middle-distance runner Vlas Bredikhin and 400m-runner Yaroslav Khlopov. Nushtaev is just one of more than 25 doping cases against Russian race-walkers recently.
