World youth championships begin Wednesday
The future stars of Canadian track and field and the world are competing for world youth titles in Cali, Colombia, this week. Competition began in the South American city Wednesday and will run until July 19.
The meet is often the first experience athletes have with international competition and has become a breeding ground for some of the world’s biggest stars. Championship records are held by many of today’s top athletes, including Usain Bolt, Kirani James and Mercy Cherono.

A Canadian team of 46 athletes is scheduled to compete over the coming days. Youth athletes are ages 17 and younger.
Many of Canada’s top athletes at the senior level have competed at the world youth championships in past years.
The event is realtively young, compared with other world championship events hosted by the IAAF. This year’s event is only the ninth championship. It is held every two years. In 2003 the event was held in Sherbrooke, Que.
More recently, in 2010, Moncton, N.B., hosted the world junior championships, an age class above youth.
