CBC Radio-Canada reported Wednesday that 18 athletes failed drug tests at the recent Pan Am Games in Toronto, one of them being women’s marathon champion Gladys Tejeda of Peru.

If Tejeda failed a drug test and is stripped of her medal, which has not yet happened, Canada’s Rachel Hannah would move from fourth to third, being awarded a bronze medal. It will likely be a while before any official changes to the results are made, as there are often appeals and ‘B’ samples which are checked.

Canada could be awarded another medal in men’s swimming. 200m butterfly silver medallist Mauricio Fiol, also of Peru, is another athletes who failed a drug test. If Fiol is stripped, Canadian Alec Page will move into bronze and his teammate, Zack Chetra, will move into second.

Of the 18 failed tests, athletes are reported to have been caught using EPO, human growth hormone and anabolic steroids, among other banned substances.
