British world champion sprinter gets her own Barbie doll

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8, Barbie modelled a doll after 200m world champion Dina Asher-Smith of Great Britain. The company hopes to put more female athlete role models into the spotlight with these “Shero” dolls.

Asher-Smith is one of several athletes who will have a Barbie made in their likeness, along with a Ukrainian fencing world champion, a Turkish Paralympic swimmer and a French soccer star.

The honour comes after Asher-Smith’s many successes since the Rio Olympics, where she competed in the 200m and 4x100m. She finished fifth in the 200m and won a bronze in the relay. In 2017, she added to her medal haul with a silver in the 4x100m at the world championships.

She continued her success in 2018 when she medals at both the Commonwealth Games and European track and field championships, but it wasn’t until 2019 when she won her first individual world title.

She won three medals at the  world championships in Doha last October, taking home a pair of silvers in the 100m and 4x100m and gold in the 200m. She also set two national records in her medal-winning performances in Qatar, running 10.83 for 100m and 21.88 for 200m.

Asher-Smith is only 24 years old, and she has steadily improved since Rio. Heading into Tokyo, she will be a favourite to medal in each of her events.
