Wow-factor bling

Police Chase medals

The process of designing a race medal that stands out takes a couple months. It starts by sketching a bunch of ideas on scrap paper. Most will end up in the recycle bin and some will be saved for future years. Then it’s important to research the internet for trends and inspiration. There are so many cool options to choose from: spinners, glitter, puzzle pieces, charms, magnets, bottle openers, transparency, glow-in-the-dark, flashing lights. Then Eureka – it came to me, the Police Chase medal should be a police car with flashing lights. The researching is done. Time to send the sketch to the medal designer:

It’s amazing how they take a basic drawing and transform into wow-factor bling. Here’s the concept they created from the sketch:

I cannot afford to rush the design of the medals. Ideally, I like to have the medals finished when the registration opens, but that didn’t happen this year. I’ve wanted to reveal this medal since January but it wasn’t perfect until now. I hope you agree, it was worth the wait.

Now it’s time to put the final touches on the Maritime Race Weekend bling. I’ve three medals to design and holding the title of Best Medals in Canada three years in a row, I cannot disappoint bling enthusiasts! Those medals are about 90 per cent complete, we are in “tweak mode” with a reveal date likely to be in April.
