Scrap gold and silver, copper might just have become every runner’s favourite metal.

A recent study looked at the value of having copper in the diet and found that the metal is quite valuable to runners and health conscious people in general. According to the study, published in Nature Chemical Biology, foods that contain copper help with weight loss.

That’s because the metal aids in the process of lipolysis which is, in plain terms, the breaking down of fats. That fat breakdown process is essential for people in terms of maintaining a healthy body weight and keep up energy stores. The researchers discovered this by testing copper intake on lab mice.

So how should runners apply this information to their day-to day lives? Lucky there are plenty of copper-dense fresh and healthy ingredients out there. Eat smart and get your dose of this fat regulating ingredient by loading up on veal, oysters, or beef or for your vegetarian runners, sesame seeds, cashews, soybeans or coffee.
