Melissa Bishop showed she’s rounding into form at just the right time by lowering her own Canadian 800m record in Edmonton on Friday. The 27-year-old Eganville, Ont. native took 0.09 seconds off her national record by running 1:57.43 at the TrackTown Classic.

Her record comes less than a week after winning the 800m at the national championships held at the same venue, Foote Field, in Edmonton. The Windsor, Ont. resident qualified for the Rio Olympics thanks to her national 800m victory on July 10.

“Canadian record in 1:57.43 on home turf? Yes, please,” said Bishop. “Perfect conditions, great rabbit, and an excellent meet. Thank you for having me.”

Friday’s meet in Edmonton was the final stop of the National Track League (NTL). The NTL is a circuit of high calibre competitions held across Canada in the summer. Bishop’s previous 800m record was set at the world championships last August in the semifinals before she went on to win silver in the finals.

The reigning world silver medallist will need to be in top form come Rio as the women’s 800m is a hotly-contested event. The Canadian is currently ranked third in the world. According to the world rankings, Bishop has broken two minutes six times in 2016, a benchmark in track and field that’s considered world class.

The Summer Olympics begin on Aug. 5. The women’s 800m rounds begin on Aug. 17 with the finals (third round) on Aug. 20.
