SHOE REVIEW: Asics GT2000 12

The new GT-2000 is a reliable, lightweight daily trainer offering gentle stability, with a few new enhancements

The Asics GT-2000 12 is a highly versatile stability trainer that’s beloved by runners. The 12 has seen a few tweaks since the last model–notably, it’s lighter and has a thicker midsole, which produces a more responsive ride. These improvements don’t go unnoticed–I really enjoyed my runs in the update.

This shoe is ideal for a runner who overpronates, or for anyone who needs a little more support. Despite (typically) wearing neutral shoes, I love the extra guidance I get from the GT-2000 on my easy days–especially when I’m feeling fatigued.

During base season, I run a lot, and I get tired! Some added stack height and extra cushion under my feet are  welcome additions.

The upper

The mesh upper is super comfortable and breathable, with a toe box that’s comfortably wide. I didn’t have any hot spots during my runs, and my foot felt very stable in the shoe.

One note on the fit: it does run a little big. I’d recommend going down half a size.

The midsole

One promise of the GT-2000 is its smooth transition from heel to toe, and this was borne out by my experience.

The midsole has a little extra cushioning since the last model, with the addition of more FF Blast Plus foam and PureGEL in the heel for a softer landing. The built-in 3D guidance system gives extra support on the medial side of the shoe, to ensure your foot is moving smoothly.

Because this shoe is so versatile, it was the only pair I brought on a recent work trip. I could do my run in the morning, and it wasn’t too high to use for weight-lifting in the afternoon; I typically use a flatter shoe for the gym, but the GT 2000 felt stable enough that I had no issues.

The outsole

The outsole is Asics’ classic Ahar Plus rubber, which makes it one of the best outsoles in the game. I’ve always found Asics outsoles to be incredibly durable and to provide strong traction, even in wet or sloppy conditions. The GT-2000 delivers on both counts.

The verdict

The GT-2000 is the perfect shoe if you’re looking to run a 5K, and also fit in a lifting sessions or a class at the gym. If you’re a runner who uses a rotation of shoes, this is an ideal easy-day trainer. Pair it with a Magic Speed or Superblast for workouts, and a Metaspeed Sky or Edge on race day, and you’ve got an ideal lineup!

To make you feel even better about your purchase, the GT-2000 12 has a low carbon footprint, coming in at 21 per cent below the industry average. I’m a big fan of the new GT-2000, and you will be, too!
