Nike to release record-breaking Alphafly 3 in January 2024

Adidas made headlines at the 2023 Berlin Marathon when Tigist Assefa broke the women’s world record while wearing the new single-use carbon-plated Adidas Adizero Pro Evo 1 racing shoe. However, Nike got redemption at Sunday’s Chicago Marathon with their new carbon-plated Alphafly 3, which was on Kelvin Kiptum’s feet when he shattered the men’s world record in a mind-boggling 2:00:35. Sifan Hassan also wore the unreleased Nike shoe, running the second-fastest women’s marathon time in history (2:13:44).
Capitalizing on Kiptum’s and Hassan’s achievements, on Tuesday Nike unveiled plans on Instagram to launch the Alphafly 3 in January 2024. The shoe is poised to be one of the most renowned carbon-plated running shoes; its predecessors, the Nike Alphafly NEXT% and Nike Alphafly NEXT% 2, were already regarded as top racing shoes for the half-marathon and marathon.
The Alphafly series has consistently been focused on the marathon, and the results of the new Alphafly 3 are a testament to its success, with Kiptum, Hassan and Kipchoge winning Abbott World Marathon Majors while wearing it. The Alphafly 3 prototype has been seen in various iterations throughout 2023. However, in the model used in Berlin and Chicago, it appears that Kipchoge and Kiptum were wearing the final form of the shoe, decorated in Nike’s signature white and orange racing colourway.
Nike has been quiet about the specific updates to the shoe, but it appears to have a sleeker upper design and a completely redesigned midsole. The shoe looks to have slimmed down, indicating a weight reduction, which is always welcome in racing shoes.
Nike has not said how much the shoe will cost. Considering the recent launch of Adidas’ single-use carbon-plated shoe at around CAD $650, we can expect a price increase from the Alphafly 2’s $375 price tag. We anticipate that many running sneakerheads will be eagerly awaiting the release of the Nike Alphafly 3 in 2024.
