SHOE REVIEW: Asics Novablast 4

The new Novablast is plush enough for your long run but responsive enough for faster running

I love this shoe!

The Novablast is my go-to trainer–full stop. It’s got bounce, it’s well cushioned, it’s totally comfortable and it’s gotten me through three years of training. For me, this is my easy-run shoe, but it’s also peppy enough to wear for some light tempo, and it’s cushioned enough for a long run. Of all the shoes in my lineup, the Novablast is what I find myself grabbing over and over again. It’s a workhorse that will set you up for success, no matter your running goal.

The fourth iteration sees some subtle updates; the most notable is a tweak to the midsole to ensure it supports Asics’ sustainability efforts. The FF Blast Plus you know and love is now FF Blast Plus ECO, which incorporates 20 per cent bio-based materials.

The upper

The upper has a re-engineered woven mesh that’s softer and lighter than its predecessor, with a reflective heel loop. I’ve found all versions of this shoe to be very comfortable. You feel strapped in without feeling restricted, and for me, there’s never been a hot spot or point of discomfort. For winter running, thanks to the breathable upper, the shoes dry easily and quickly, if you find yourself in some wet conditions.

The midsole

The midsole is still the FF Blast Plus we know and love, but the new Novablast introduces the ECO edition, using 20 per cent bio-based materials. This means the bouncy, chipper ride of the FF Blast Plus is now easier on the environment.

SHOE REVIEW: Asics GT2000 12

Personally, I find this to be an exceptional midsole. Usually heightened responsiveness comes with poor cushioning; a highly responsive shoe does not always feel plush. Somehow, the Novablast walks that line. It’s simultaneously extremely well cushioned and very responsive–so responsive that I use it for some base-training intervals (where I’d typically wear a plated shoe, like the Metaspeed).

The outsole

The outsole is a key part of the bouncy effect you get from the Novablast. It’s trampoline-inspired (hence the bounce), with added grip, to ensure no energy is lost. As always, it’s made of AHAR rubber (which is extremely durable), adding to the lifespan of your shoe.

Final thoughts

As I said, I love this shoe. It’s my go-to trainer. If you’re looking for one shoe to do it all, this is a great buy. If you’ve got the budget for multiple pairs, get the Novablast alongside the Magic Speed or Metaspeed for a perfect lineup.
